During the Television Critics Association press tour, Hamilton breakout star Daveed Diggs gave his perspective on the forthcoming TNT series Snowwpiercer. The Tony winner will play lead character Layton Well in the series and said the show is expected to differ in ways from the 2013 film that starred Chris Evans.
According to Daveed, the show will delve into the political aspects in more detail than the film. Diggs added that the series will keep the same theme of the rich living in the front and the poor being delegated to the back of the train. In addition, he said the series will explore who operates the train in more detail.
Diggs reveals that Layton Well is poor and will reside in the tail end of the train that travels non-stop around a post-apocalyptic world. His character will have to struggle to survive on little food.
The Snowpiercer star went on to say that the politics suggested in the film will be looked at further in the series and says the show will also explore the mechanics of the train. Daveed is a fan of the film but feels the series will have more time to further explore certain aspects of the film. The talented actor told reporters that it was details like that drew him to the series.
Diggs claims to be a sci-fi nerd and was excited to share that his rap band Clipping is nominated for a Hugo Award for their album Splendor & Misery. Daveed also revealed that he will be flying to Helsinki to perform at this week’s Hugo Awards. Diggs also told reporters he is presently reading The Broken Earth series by his favorite sci-fi author Nora K. Jemisin to help him prepare for his role in Snowpiercer.
In addition to Daveed Diggs, Snowpiercer will star Jennifer Connelly. The TNT series is currently in the pilot and developmental stages but is expected to be picked up for the 2018 season.
