In the late 1990s, Brandy and Monica fought over a boy in “The Boy is Mine” and won a Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group.
Since then, the two have maintained a real rivalry that they’ve never publicly discussed. However, on August 9, their battle was kicked up a notch as the two both posted birthday tweets honoring the late legend Whitney Houston.
Monica, probably unknowingly, kicked off their one-sided spat by posting a sweet message and photo of the icon on Instagram. Within a few hours, Brandy took to her own Instagram page to post her own tribute and a collage with 9 photos of her and Whitney together. In her post, she wrote, “I love you forever…thank you for trusting me with the torch!!!”
She followed it up with several additional post, including one that featured Brandy singing Whitney’s 1977 hit “The Greatest Love of All.”
This set off Monica’s fans who immediately started commenting on how Monica’s post was actually about the legendary songbird, while Brandy’s ultimately promoted herself. Monica stayed quiet, but Brandy just couldn’t let Monica’s fans comments go without a response that she directed at Monica.
Brandy posted a lengthy rant in her post’s comments section that started with “Monica needs to really check her evil ass fans.” She continued with, “Me and Whitney have nothing to do with anyone but the two of us…we made history and I cared more about being with her than I did about anything else.”
While Monica stayed quiet throughout the exchange, but Brandy eventually posted a final post that included “#offwiththecomments already made headlines.”
